If you’re new to the world of websites, web hosting, and optimising your site to rank the best it can, we thought we’d give you some of the best SEO tips to read over the Christmas break!
What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation – as the name suggests, it optimises your website to appear in search engine results.
What does a search engine do?
Google is the most obvious and common search engine, so we’ll talk about that. It crawls billions and billions of websites, pages and content and determines the best content for the search query that has been entered. Of course, it can’t show all of that content at once, so it ranks the content from “most relevant” to least, and that’s what it displays to the user.
Why is SEO so important?
It’s all well and good to have people visiting your website by typing in the URL, but what if they don’t even know you exist? It’s critical that your business appears in Google results when someone types in something that relates to your business. For example, if you run a website selling shoes, then when someone types “shoe store” – you want to appear!
The higher in the results your website appears, the better. It’s almost unheard of for someone to crawl through 20 pages of Google results to find what they’re looking for – you want to be on the first page, and in the first position, if you can!
SEO is the kind of area you want to keep learning about – so we recommend constantly searching online for the best SEO tips to keep abreast of new trends, changes and recommendations.
How to craft effective SEO on your website
The biggest thing to remember is that although you want to optimise your site for Google and other search engines, you also want it to remain useful and valuable for your users. In particular, avoid writing content that constantly repeats the same phrase over and over.
You also want to make sure your site has original and unique content. There’s no point copying and pasting text from other sites that are performing well. It’s not professional, but it also won’t help your search engine results either. Be unique, be creative, and let the individuality of your business shine!
Remember to have external and internal links – but make them useful, and don’t go overboard. There’s no point linking every second sentence in your blog or website content – it won’t help! Pick out a few key phrases or topics, and link to relevant websites. Make sure the websites you’re linking to are quality and genuine; you don’t want to be sending your users to untrustworthy sites!
